In Memoriam - Sivadasan Kanangat, PhD, F(ACHI)

It's with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Sivadasan Kanangat on Friday, March 1, 2024. From Siva's colleagues at Rush University Medical Center:

"Sivadasan, or “SK” as some of you knew him, was a leader in histocompatibility and transplantation medicine who was passionate about mentoring students and clinicians who spent time in his laboratory. He enjoyed an almost 40-year career in science, and he really loved his job and working at Rush.

Sivadasan was an accomplished researcher, clinician and teacher who dedicated time to advancing the careers of others. His family was a major focus in his life; he rejoiced in their personal and professional accomplishments. Sivadasan is greatly loved and survived by his wife and two adult children. They are so grateful for all the milestones they shared and will forever continue to honor his love for science and genuine desire to contribute to the betterment of this world and hope you will all do the same.

We will share with you the details regarding the funeral or memorial service as we hear more details from the Kanangat family."

Shocked and saddened beyond belief :( Just came across this posting while surfing the ASHI website. I was in communication with Dr. Kanangat over time as a previous member of different ASHI committees. He was very inspiring and encouraging and loved to talk passionately about science and his work. Your kindness will be missed Dr. Kanangat. Om Shanti. 🙏

Totally heartbroken at sudden passing away of Siva. Siva was a great friend and mentor. Always had positive outlook towards people and life. Was only a phone call away - clearly remember having discussion with him before the DTRC interview and also very recently when we were starting the heart transplant program here at BIDMC. Very helpful and suggested that I reach out to Melissa Weeks for inspector training etc. as an excellent way to learn and collaborate at the same time. Always wanting to help; have heard this from multiple colleagues. Always talked very fondly and proudly about his children. May God give strength to his family to bear this huge loss, prayers for the family. RIP Siva.

I'm devastated by the news of your passing, Siva. You were one of the few who would engage with me in discussions about HLA science. Your dedication to writing literature review articles for the ASHI Quarterly was truly inspiring, showcasing your passion and excellence. Whenever we had time at ASHI meetings, I cherished our conversations about science and family, always leaving with a smile thanks to your infectious laughter. As a friend, you brought warmth, kindness, and joy into every interaction. Your presence was a gift, both personally and professionally, leaving an indelible impression on all who knew you. You'll always be remembered as a beloved friend and esteemed colleague. May you rest in peace, knowing that you'll forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Siva, your sudden departure is just heartbreaking. So many people have contacted me to ask me if you'd been sick and to share how much you meant to them. I'll always remember you laughing at me on the dance floor at the ASHI annual meetings...shaking your head and saying, "You sure love to dance!" Thank you for the immeasurable amount of time you gave so freely to ASHI, Siva. I hope that you are at peace knowing that you made a difference for ASHI, the field, and in the lives of so many people.

It was and is still a shock that Siva is gone. He was a great friend. Besides originating from the same part of India, we shared many things in common. I remember the comradery at ASHI meetings and the many phone calls. When I asked him to be the ASHI Quarterly's Associate Editor (AE) for current literature, he readily agreed. He made the most contributions to ASHI Quarterly - writing a review for each issue for nearly 10 years and spanning four editor-in-chiefs. He loved it so much that when I invited him to be an AE for Human Immunology, he said that he wanted to continue with ASHI Quarterly and accepting another one will be too much. Even though I have not met his family, I came to know about them from Siva. My heartfelt condolences. Bye my friend. Rest in peace. James Mathew

Siva was a great friend, colleague, and mentor to me. You could have a conversation with him about inspections, Science, Clinical Cases, Education, and life. Picked up phone whether he was at a meeting, on a train commuting, or sleeping, and always there to help. Someone, I could always count on, and knew he was a phone call away. Couldn't believe the news from ASHI, and I called anyways. Realized the news is true, when there was no answer this time. He will be dearly missed by me and many others who interacted with him. He will be remembered as a true gentleman with a smile. All deaths are sad, and some are shocking; as many felt in Siva's case, this is devastating. May his soul Rest in Peace.--Prabhakar Putheti

Siva, as I had known him was such a gentle soul, kind hearted, always smiling and willing to help. He wrote the literature review articles for ASHI Quarterly for many years. This is one of the most difficult article to write but he made it easy and simple. Personally, he was a good friend and colleague who loved to talk about his family. I will miss you Siva at all HLA meetings. May you rest in peace and god give strength to your family. Om Shanti. Manish
