Directors in Training:

Steps in the Process

To Do

Registration

Email ‘packet’ to the accreditation office (MWeeks@ashi-hla.org) containing:

  • Official training plan
  • Mentor letter accepting the candidate
  • The candidate’s CV
  • Two letters of recommendation (in addition to the mentor’s letter)
  • Copies of graduate and/or medical diplomas, certificate(s) of post-doctoral experience or letter(s) from post-doctoral supervisor(s)
  • Board certification(s)
  • Foreign Equivalency evaluation of highest degree, if that was obtained outside of the US

Progress Report

Before the training is complete, approximately midway  through the training period, a progress report will be  requested.

This report will gauge that the training outlined in the registration phase is being followed and practiced.

Portfolio Development

Start putting your portfolio of cases together at any time. Templates for the log & detailed cases are linked on this page.

Board Certification

If not already board certified, this is around the time you should consider taking the ACHI exam or another board certification option.

Green Light

Once you have board certification, you need to get the “green light” from the portfolio committee to submit your portfolio. It’s an easy step – email your CV and a quick summary of your completed training to the accreditation office: MWeeks@ashi-hla.org

Portfolio Review

Submit your portfolio electronically before one of the 3 deadlines:

  • January 1
  • May 1
  • September 1

Oral Interview

This is less of an oral exam and more of a collegial conversation via conference call or Zoom, about an hour and a half long.

Participants include DIT candidate, DTRC/Portfolio Committee chair & vice-chair, 2 portfolio reviewers, 1 ARB representative, and the accreditation manager. A decision will be sent by email a day or 2 after the call.

EXAMINATION & CERTIFICATION

The ACHI Histocompatibility Laboratory Director Examination is one option to meet the board certification requirement and will continue to be offered only in September.

Histocompatibility Laboratory Director Examination Fee: $900

Annual Certification Fees for Histocompatibility Laboratory Director: $160
