High-Resolution Sequencing in HLA Laboratories: Past, Present, and Future

Join us for an engaging learning experience

Webinar Overview

This webinar will explore the evolution of sequencing technologies in clinical HLA testing and their growing impact on transplant immunogenetics. Participants will gain insight into how high-resolution HLA typing became the standard in most laboratories and how continued advances in sequencing are shaping the future of patient care and precision medicine in transplantation.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe the historical development and milestones of sequencing in clinical HLA.
  • Explain how technological advances have improved the accuracy and application of HLA sequencing in the clinical setting.
  • Discuss emerging trends and the future impact of next-generation sequencing in transplant immunogenetics and patient outcomes.

About the Speaker

Karen Sherwood, BSc(Hons), PhD, CHS, F(ACHI)
Karen Sherwood

Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UBC

HLA Laboratory Director, Vancouver General Hospital, VCH

Scientific Program Manager, Genome Canada Transplant Consortium

Dr. Karen Sherwood is one of the HLA Laboratory Directors of the British Columbian Provincial Transplant Immunology Laboratory at Vancouver General Hospital, Canada; Clinical Associate Professor at the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in University of British Columbia; Co-PI and the Scientific Lead for the Genome Canada Transplant Consortium program; and the Cluster Director for the Precision Medicine in Transplantation Research Excellence Cluster at UBC.

Dr. Sherwood's research primarily focuses on precision medicine in the context of transplantation, encompassing both hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplantation. Her work involves translational immunology, aiming to bridge the gap between basic scientific research and clinical application to enhance patient care. She is particularly involved in projects that utilize genomic and precision health technologies to personalize treatments and reduce the risk of transplant rejection.
