The American College of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ACHI) is a certifying board offering voluntary credentialing examinations in the field of histocompatibility and immunogenetics. ACHI provides certification and promotes continuing education for histocompatibility and immunogenetics professionals. The College is sponsored by the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) and approved as a certification board by the DHHS.

ACHI offers five levels of certification:

Technologists:

Certified Histocompatibility Associate: CHA(ACHI)
Certified Histocompatibility Technologist: CHT(ACHI)
Certified Histocompatibility Specialist: CHS(ACHI)

Directors:
Associate of the ACHI: S(ACHI)
Affiliate of the ACHI: A(ACHI)
Fellow of the ACHI: F(ACHI)

ACHI also provides a process for granting formal recognition by means of certifying health care professionals working in histocompatibility and immunogenetics that have met professional standards. These individuals are examined at the pre and post-doctoral levels. By promoting consistency and quality of practice, ACHI assures the public that a certified individual has successfully completed the following: an approved educational program and an examination designed to assess knowledge, experience and skills.

ACHI evaluates and issues certificates of competency to successful applicants, provides a national standard that can be used to gauge professionalism, implements the educational and competency standards established by ASHI for laboratory personnel, defines and promotes laboratory work in histocompatibility and immunogenetics as an occupation in the public sector, promotes credentialing for histocompatibility testing professionals, promotes continued professional growth and documents such activities, maintains a registry of certified individuals and disseminates information by publications or other means.

Many see ACHI’s primary role as providing credentialing services to all levels of histocompatibility and immunogenetics professionals. Included in this process is the continual assessment and periodic updating of competency standards to reflect current laboratory practices. Another key function of ACHI is to encourage continuing certification by approving valuable CE credits in a cost-effective manner. By participating in ACHI-approved CE programs as a staff technologist, administrator, vendor or organization, you are promoting professional growth while enhancing knowledge. Together, these activities advance our work, serve our clients, and ultimately, improve patient care.
