Thomas E. Starzl, MD, PhD, ‘Father of Transplantation,’ has passed away

Dr. Thomas E. Starzl, known as the “father of transplantation” for his role in pioneering and advancing organ transplantation from a risky, rare procedure to an accessible surgery for the neediest patients, died peacefully Saturday, March 4, 2017, at his home in Pittsburgh. Dr. Starzl pioneered liver transplant surgery in the 1960s and was a leading researcher into anti-rejection drugs.
