A summary of the main conclusions from the March 29-30, 2012 Kidney Paired Donation Consensus Conference held in Herndon, Virginia, was recently published in the American Journal of Transplantation. Click here for the abstract. ASHI is pleased to be acknowledged in that publication as one of the “major contributors” and is also proud to note that several ASHI members are co-authors of the publication and that several additional ASHI members participated in the conference. This publication provides an important review of both the benefits and problems associated with the efforts of single-center and multi-center registries that facilitate the possibility for exchange donor kidney transplants for patients who otherwise would be unlikely to have transplants that quickly and to, thereby, increase the total number of transplants each year. It should be noted however, that some of the “consensus” conclusions from that conference are actually still controversial and no final recommendations can yet be made.
