A Message from the NMDP/Be The Match

The NMDP/Be The Match has requested that ASHI send out the following message regarding the new Global Registration Identifier for Donors (GRID).

The World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) has approved and is requiring that an updated global standard for donor identification be implemented by April 29, 2019. The new standard is called the Global Registration Identifier for Donors (GRID). GRID provides a globally unique adult donor identifier. The GRID implementation timeline was determined and mandated by the WMDA (World Marrow Donor Association). The NMDP/Be The Match has been preparing for the implementation of GRID since 2018. Network announcements were sent to transplant centers with an assumption that each center would communicate with their labs for GRID readiness.

However, it came to the NMDP/Be The Match's attention recently that our assumption may not be true and that some HLA labs were missed in the GRID communication. We are incredibly sorry for the gap in communication. We are here to work with you on this implementation and will help however we can. If you'd like to set up some time with someone from the GRID team at the NMDP to ask questions, please reach out to In addition, Neng Yu, MD, the Director, Clinical HLA Services, NMDP Be The Match can be contacted for more information at
