We are sorry to inform you that Dr. Kamala Balakrishnan passed away on August 7, 2018 from complications related to infection at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. She was a former ASHI president, former chair of ASHI's accreditation program and former treasurer and secretary of the society. Dr. Balakrishnan directed the HLA laboratory at Paul Hoxworth Blood Center in Cincinnati for many years. Prior to coming to the US, she retired from the armed forces in India. As a senior medical officer and colonel in the Indian Armed Forces, she served in the Himalayas as well as in Kashmir. She is survived by her husband, two sons, a daughter-in-law and countless friends.

"Dr. B was very active in the histocompatibility community, and ASHI in particular in which she became President, Treasurer, Secretary and Chair of the Accreditation Program. Dr. Balakrishnan was instrumental in the development of ASHI as the leading scientific and accreditation organization for HLA Laboratories. Dr. Balakrishnan wrote an excellent review of her personal journey in histocompatibility for the ASHI Quarterly, Third and Fourth Quarters in 2016. Our condolences are also with her husband Bala Balakrishnan, her two sons and her family. Dr. B. often spoke of her life in India with Bala before coming to the United States. We will always remember her".

"Hoxworth Blood Center sends its condolences to the ASHI family for the loss of Dr. Kamala Balakrishnan (known to her staff as Dr. B.). Although she has been retired from Hoxworth for a while, she was an integral part of the Hoxworth Blood Center family as the Director of the Transplantation Immunology Division (TID) from 1981 through 2001. The Transplantation Immunology Division still has four employees who fondly remember working with Dr. B. She worked hard to make sure that the HLA Lab at Hoxworth was equipped with the most current technology during her tenure. From Flow Cytometry Crossmatching to DNA testing, she was a strong advocate for HLA and its role in the transplant community. Dr. B. personally helped design the new HLA Lab when Hoxworth was constructing its new facility. She spent countless hours making sure everything was just right."
