HLA Laboratory Business Model

Good afternoon,

It is my understanding there are two (2) types of business/financial models for HLA Laboratories:

1. Subsidiary of Hospital or University (Independent) OR

2. Hospital or University based

Would you be able to outline the guidelines of both types of labs and their business plan and financial map?

If anyone has experience in either type, can you please share any information and your experience.

Whether a lab is considered hospital-based or independent depends on the Medicare rules. If a hospital's board of directors, or a board that also oversees the hospital, is ultimately responsible for a lab (and the prices charged), then the lab is hospital-based. If a lab is ultimately answerable to another entity, then it can function as an independent laboratory.

Just saw this thread. If lab is under the department of medicine or surgery, but files its own medicare cost report, is this kind of lab a hospital based or independent lab?
