NMDP/ASHI Cell Repository - Introduction.

NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository

The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), by contractual agreement between the respective organizations, have formed the NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository with the desire to receive, preserve and distribute HLA-defined B-lymphoblastoid cell cultures and cell pellets to individual investigators and clinical HLA typing laboratories for the purpose of supporting HLA-related research and establishing and maintaining quality assurance in clinical typing laboratories or for other approved purposes. Funding for this project comes from a US Naval cooperative agreement and contributions from ASHI. All operations for the repository are located at the Blood Centers of the Pacific, Irwin Center in San Francisco, CA. Management of the repository is under control of the NMDP in accordance with recommendations from the NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository steering committee. The cell line cultures and pellets offered by the repository are divided by source as follows: 1) those originating from the efforts of the 10th International Workshop and 2) those originating from donors by consent.

Acknowledgment of the NMDP / ASHI as the Source of Cells

The NMDP and ASHI solicits information in the form of data or reprints involving NMDP / ASHI cell lines. In publications, please cite both agencies and the pertinent cell line name and / or number. In addition, the following statement must be included: "The NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository is supported by funding from the Office of Naval Research and the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. The views expressed in this article are those of the authors and do not reflect the official policy or position of the Department of Navy, Department of Defense, the U.S. Government, NMDP, ASHI or members of the NMDP/ASHI Cell Repository Steering Committee."

Biohazardous Material and Safety Procedures

A detailed discussion of quality control and safety procedures used by the NMDP / ASHI cell repository is available upon request. Additional information may be found in the Journal of Tissue Culture Methods (1) and from the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC)(2). NIH and CDC have described four biosafety levels, which are a combination of standard laboratory practices and techniques, safety equipment, and laboratory facilities (3). These biosafety levels provide increasing levels of protection to laboratory personnel and to the environment. NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository cell lines are in the Class 2 agent category.

Restrictions on Use

The intended use for these cell line cultures or cell pellets is to establish and maintain appropriate clinical laboratory quality assurance for molecular based histocompatibility testing and for research purposes only. Commercial use of any cell lines is strictly forbidden without the consent of the NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository Steering Committee. Third party distribution of all cells lines is forbidden, since the practice not only violates agreements on specific cells lines, but can also result in the inadvertent spreading of lines contaminated with other cells or microbes.

Disclaimer

The cell line cultures and pellets offered by the NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository have been tested for bacteria, fungi and mycoplasma related to cell culture growth and viability only and not for all infectious agents. HLA typing has been performed on each cell line to verify allele identity upon deposit and periodically thereafter as a quality assurance measure. There are no warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitations, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Those who receive NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository cell line cultures or cell pellets are responsible for safe storage, handling and use of said cell line cultures or pellets. The NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository is not liable for any damages or injuries resulting from receipt and / or improper, inappropriate, unintended, wrongful or negligent handling or use of an NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository cell line culture or pellet. While every effort is made to insure authenticity, purity or typicality of the cell lines on deposit, the NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository is not liable for any damages or injuries arising from misidentification, misrepresentation, lack of purity or atypicality of the cell lines. Buyers’ exclusive remedy for any losses resulting from defective or nonconforming cell lines, breach of warranty or any other cause, including negligence or strict liability, shall be suitable replacement of the cell line.

Limited Replacement Policy

The NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository offers a limited replacement of a cell line culture or pellet if the customer reports it was received non-viable (cultures only) or atypical from its stated description. Problem shipments must be reported within 30 days of receipt. Frozen shipments received thawed or damaged should be reported by the customer to the freight courier upon receipt. The NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository is to be notified after a claim has been filed to arrange for another shipment. In cases where the NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository discovers an in-house error in authentication or purity, recipients of the specific cell line in question will be notified individually. Replacements with the authentic culture or pellet will be offered whenever possible. If the error is discovered as a result of new technology or is not clearly the result of mistakes at the NMDP / ASHI Cell Repository, details will be made public but replacements will only be offered after case-by-case consideration. All means of publicizing errors, namely the NMDP and ASHI web sites and ASHI Quarterly, will be utilized to notify the user communities.
