2012 National Faculty

ASHI's Education Committee would like to announce the 2012 National Faculty. . .

John A. Gerlach, PhD, D(ABHI)
Michigan University

John A. Gerlach  a professor in the Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics Program (BLDP) and Department of Medicine at Michigan State University.  He serves as the laboratory director for the Immunohematology and Serology Laboratory on campus that supports end-stage renal and cardiac transplant programs in Grand Rapids, MI.  He also serves at the laboratory director for the Olin Student Health Center.  He is the program director for the BLDP.  His career began as a blood banker and shifted to histocompatibility during graduate school and has over 35 years of clinical laboratory experience.   His teaching areas are transfusion and transplant medicine, molecular diagnostics, immunodiagnostics and introductory pathology.

William H. Hildebrand, PhD, D(ABHI)
University of Oklahoma  Health Science Center

William Hildebrand is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.  The focus of Dr. Hildebrand’s laboratory is the comparative analyses of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and class II molecules.  One way in which his lab studies MHC genes is through DNA sequence-based typing.  His laboratory pioneered the development of DNA sequencing as an HLA typing tool, and he continues to provide HLA DNA SBT as a service for transplant patients in Oklahoma: Dr. Hildebrand provides a historical perspective on molecular HLA typing as well as insight on new developments in this area. In order to functionally study MHC molecules, his laboratory has designed a unique method for producing native HLA proteins.  A ready source of native HLA proteins did not previously exist, and given a ready source of HLA proteins his laboratory has been able to determine how the HLA of HIV, West Nile virus, influenza, tuberculosis, and cancerous cells differs from the HLA of healthy cells. Such data will indicate fundamental changes in the host proteome following infection/transformation, and such data has the potential to be developed for vaccines and diagnostics.

Annette Jackson, PhD
Johns Hopkins University

Annette Jackson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Associate Director of the Immunogenetics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. She began her career in histocompatibility as a technologist, working in both clinical and research laboratories at the University of Minnesota. In 1997, she became supervisor of the molecular typing section of the Clinical Transplant and Immunology Laboratory at Duke University.  She became certified as a CHS in 1998 and began serving as an ASHI laboratory inspector.  She received her Ph.D. in Immunology at Duke University in 2005, investigating the role of epigenetics in controlling T cell receptor VDJ gene rearrangement. She has published on transplantation topics including microchimerism, desensitization, paired kidney exchange, and anti-endothelial cell antibodies.  Dr. Jackson enjoys teaching and has lectured at the AFDT Histocompatibility Specialist Course, Georgetown Teleconference Series, American Transplant Congress, and national ASHI meetings.

Donna Phelan, BA, CHS, MT(HEW)
Barnes-Jewish Hospital

Donna Phelan has been in the field of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics for 32 years and the Technical Supervisor at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri since 1987.She received her BA from the University of Massachusetts and has been a member of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) since 1980. She served on numerous ASHI committees as Councilor, Accreditation Commissioner, Co-chair and Program Director, Treasurer, and Vice President of Operations.  She also served on the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) as Secretary/Treasurer and as a member of the Examinations Committee. Her certifications include Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) from ABHI and Medical Technologist (MT) from HEW.

Ms. Phelan’s organizational and motivational skills eased ASHI through extensive reorganization efforts in the Accreditation Program and ASHI leadership restructures.  As the first non-doctoral Accreditation Program Director, she aided the restructure to make the evaluation process consistent and fair for all laboratories and personnel.  When ASHI needed to restructure leadership, she filled in as “trail boss” to motivate members to implement strategic plans and increase Society efficiency and communications.  As the Society’s first Vice President of Operations, she continued to educate and represent ASHI at governmental agencies. Ms. Phelan has authored 8 book chapters and co-authored 41 articles in peer reviewed journals.  She has presented her work internationally and has given 30 workshops for different societies and organizations.  Her awards include “ASHI Outstanding Technologist” (1991) and ASHI “Distinguished Service” (2004).
