Director, Marketing - Applied Markets
Invitrogen, Brown Deer, WI

Position Objective

  • Identifies, manages and delivers the right message to the right customer using the right channel. Identifies and leverages functional expertise within the Marketing team.\
  • Oversees the success of generating demand, supporting the global brand and determining optimal channel utilization.
  • Contributes to the P&L for business
  • Successful launch of major new product platform

Essential Functions

Develops global marketing strategies, including, but not limited to: 1) final Go To Market/Marketing Mix Strategy 2) Segmentation Strategy, i.e., bio-tech, academic, molecular diagnostics, PCR; 3) Competitive Response Strategy; 4) Adjacent Market strategy 5) Product/Technology Brand Strategy; 6) Price Getting Strategy; 7) Market Dynamics; 8) Consumption Dynamics (customer behavior); 9) Purchase Dynamics (customer behavior). Maximize business in channels per framework set up by regions. Determines the strategic priority of all programs and the budget allocation thereof. Attracts and retains best in class staff

Synthesizes and analyzes data to determine the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and channels; market strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT); Pricing and Profitability (customer/technology/market/tactic) Analytics; Win Loss; market share; Competitor Financials/performance. Approves final forecast. Gathers VOC (to develop message and segment strategy); sales input to beta test campaigns and provide input to future campaigns; recommends final forecast. Links product to P&L; beta tests themes; tests emotional drivers; conducts brand awareness, value & trends. Evaluates staff.

Writes global Creative Brief; manages executional resources amongst regional market development managers; Ensures consistent communications re: internal/external vision, priorities & benchmarks. Develops staff.

Manages global advertising & promotion costs to ensure they are within budget; completes New Product Development toll gate processes reguirements. Plans and executes product life cycle strategies, including end-of-life product strategies and sku creation and management.

Directly manages new major product platform to be launched this year.

Formulates and recommends policies, objectives, budgets, plans, procedures and schedules for the department; develops, recommends, implements and monitors uniform programs; conducts quality control audits and evaluates work standards and performance levels ensuring uniformity, effectiveness and appropriate staffing levels.

Participates in hiring and promoting team of employees; assigns, directs and reviews their work.

May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.

Nature and Scope

This position interacts with varying levels of internal and external personnel requiring the ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing Invitrogen’s product development, positioning, operating plans and strategies. Position communicates Invitrogen’s mission as well as interprets policies/programs. Effectiveness in this role requires an in-depth knowledge of those operating plans and strategies as well as industry practices for developing, promoting and selling similar products. Position provides leadership in corporate operating mechanisms: semi-annual strategic review (3 year business plan), semi-annual talent and organizational reviews; and other regular organization operating mechanisms. Requires enthusiastic, creativity, risk-taker with the ability to comprehend and contribute to the entire IVGN portfolio. High level of visible activity in fostering the rapid acceptance, open dialogue and exchange of new products and technologies in the clinical diagnostics area. Motivation and ability to become an integral partner with the business segment, commercial and manufacturing operations as well as the research and development aspects of the company. Erroneous decisions will result in critical delay(s) in schedules and/or unit operations and may jeopardize overall business activities. Will provide direction and coaching to next level supervisors.

Education

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related discipline. 10 years experience with three years leadership position.
Strongly Preferred: MBA

Experience

Required: Proven expertise in market development, viewed as a highly specialized resource across functions. Three years experience in Global Product Development. Proven management experience, which may include multiple departments. Has advanced, in-depth knowledge of biotech business, competitors and industry practices and functional knowledge of strategic business planning.

Experience with diagnostics products for biological systems in regulated markets strongly preferred.

Required: Able to act in a highly autonomous capacity and work on the most complex problems with corporate visibility. Able to make decisions of complex issues and develops guidelines for functional area. Recognized as a thought leader in market development with a high profile. Recognizes and develops talent.

Advanced, in-depth knowledge of Invitrogen’s business, competitors and industry practices and functional knowledge of strategic business planning.

Working Conditions

Works in an office environment. May, on a continuous basis, sit at desk for a long period of time; intermittently answer telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means. Some walking and lifting up to 20 lbs. may be required. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Must be flexible to work varying schedules and hours as needed. Frequent travel, including international, may be required.
