Research Scientist The UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory is accepting applications for a research scientist position to join a research and development team which is responsible for validation projects for a diagnostic laboratory that provides specialty testing related to transplantation and immunogenetics. The team also participates in basic and clinical research projects. Duties Responsible for all aspects of assigned validation projects. Project and experimental design include applying relevant literature and ensuring statistically sound experimental plan; performing bench work; preparing reports that meet all regulatory requirements; creating written procedures; transferring validated procedures into clinical practice, including training staff; participating in strategy development, prioritizing projects, identifying problems and problem solving, and supervising staff; conducting basic and clinical research projects and assisting with writing proposals for research funding; publishing or contributing to publications of research results in peer-reviewed journals; presenting research at seminars and conferences. Qualifications Qualified candidates must have an M.D. or Ph.D. degree in a Biological Science, with training in histocompatibility, immunogenetics transplantation immunology, or related field. Successful candidates must have demonstrated expertise in immunological assays and molecular biology techniques. The successful candidate must possess strong organizational and problem-solving skills, be able to work effectively both independently and as a team member, have excellent oral and written English communication skills and strong computer skills. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. Laboratory The Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory is a not-for-profit laboratory at the University of California at San Francisco, one of the country’s premiere academic and research institutions. The laboratory was established in 1981 in the Department of Surgery to provide specialized diagnostic services for allogeneic transplantation and to conduct related research. The laboratory provides support for allogeneic transplants of blood, bone marrow, kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung, small bowel, and cornea. The laboratory has a dynamic environment which provides outstanding opportunities for gaining experience and personal growth. The laboratory performs state-of-the-art histocompatibility testing. Laboratory assays include HLA typing, HLA antibody screening, crossmatching, chimerism testing, immune monitoring, KIR typing, MIC typing, TCR repertoire and TREC analysis. Prepare technical reports, product summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. Effectively communicate and present scientific ideas to a broader audience. Participate in scientific conferences and contribute to scientific journals. Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature, competitor products and attending scientific seminars and meetings. Perform fundamental literature searches related to products under development. Contribute scientific expertise and critique across groups within R&D. Comply with all company safety regulations and procedures. May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned. Masters degree in a specific scientific discipline preferred. Experience Requires a minimum of 8 years laboratory experience in a work environment with a Bachelor’s degree; or a Master’s degree with 3 years laboratory experience. Demonstrated working knowledge of scientific principles. Knowledge of transplant immunology or histocompatibility testing will be an asset. Proven proficiency in experimental design. Demonstrated competence in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures for manufacturing reagents, systems, products or technologies required. As a critical technical contributor to this Product development team, the role will plan, carry out and report on research and development activities centered on transplant rejection screening, analysis and monitoring. In addition, the position will support scientific knowledge gathering and analysis in support of strategic planning and preparation of team proposals. Responsible for developing and launching new products by initiating, directing and executing scientific research and/or development strategies through the research staff or individual studies. May act as the technical lead on new product development teams. Essential Functions Develop new products and technologies through the New Product Introduction process. Independently initiate, direct and execute scientific research and/or development strategies. Independently plans and designs experimental methods to achieve technical objectives. Identifies and solves problems in experimental designs. Critically analyze complex data using the knowledge of the R&D field, interpret and integrate experiment results with project objectives. Maintain accurate lab notebook and training file in accordance with relevant Invitrogen required standards to support patent application and defense as well as other international standards (e.g., ISO compliance, GLP/GMP requirements, etc.). May supervise Associate Scientists in their daily experiments and troubleshooting. May lead project teams. Investigate, create and develop new methods and technologies for project advancement. Act as the technical lead or Program Manager for a development project and interface with other departments (i.e., Marketing, Business Development, Technical Service and/or Operations) to coordinate product development and improvement. Perform fundamental literature and patent searches related to products under development. Recognize opportunities for in-licensing and internal patent development. Perform preliminary market surveys to assess new opportunities. Work with Sr. Scientist on preparation of patent disclosures. Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature, competing technologies and/or products and attendance of scientific seminars and meetings.
