UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory

The UCSF Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory is accepting applications for a candidate to the director-in-training program to meet the requirements for directorship certification by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics.  The program provides training in all aspects of clinical histocompatibility testing and opportunities to conduct related research. The successful candidate must have an M.D. or a Ph.D. in an appropriate area of biological science; a minimum of two years of postdoctoral work in immunology, immunogenetics or cell biology; hold or be eligible to obtain a license for histocompatibility testing in the State of California; meet the educational requirements for certification by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics; and be eligible to work in the United States.

The successful candidate must possess strong organizational and problem-solving skills, be able to work effectively both independently and as a team member, have excellent oral and written English communication skills and exceptional computer skills. The candidate must be able to critically analyze data from high complexity laboratory tests.

The trainee will gain experience in all aspects of laboratory administration and operation. This dynamic and highly interactive position will include duties such as review of test data, report generation, clinical interpretation, troubleshooting, development and validation of new tests, technologist training, ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies, and participation in a quality systems program. The trainee will also participate in clinical and administrative meetings within the laboratory and with transplant teams.

The Immunogenetics and Transplantation Laboratory is a not-for-profit laboratory at the University of California at San Francisco, one of the country's premiere academic and research institutions. The laboratory was established in 1981 in the Department of Surgery to provide specialized diagnostic services for allogeneic transplantation and to conduct related research. The mission of the laboratory is to provide high quality diagnostic testing, conduct research, and educate.  The laboratory provides support for allogeneic transplants of blood, bone marrow, kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung, small bowel, and cornea. The laboratory has a dynamic environment which provides outstanding opportunities for gaining experience and personal growth.  Activities of the laboratory include:

  • Supporting a large kidney transplant program with approximately 5% of the UNOS waiting list. 
  • Serving as a reference laboratory for several blood and marrow transplant programs.
  • Providing deceased donor testing for a leading OPO
  • Serving as a core laboratory for the NIH Immune Tolerance Network.
  • Serving as an NMDP contract laboratory
  • Providing laboratory support for several national clinical trials
  • Providing educational programs for physicians, coordinators, and histocompatibility scientists
  • Conducting research related to transplantation and immunogenetics

Laboratory assays include HLA typing (SBT, SSO, SSP), HLA antibody screening (ELISA, Luminex, Dynachip), crossmatching (CDC, CDC-AHG, flow cytometry), chimerism testing (STR, VNTR, real-time PCR, in situ hybridization), Cylex ImmuKnow, KIR typing, MIC typing, TCR repertoire and TREC analysis.

Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Laboratory, Department of Pathology, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL

Rush University Medical Center in Chicago is seeking a Director for its Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics Laboratory. The laboratory is a full service laboratory supporting kidney, heart, liver, pancreas, and stem cell transplant programs.  The laboratory currently performs testing including DNA HLA typing (SSP, SSOPH-Luminex, and SBT), crossmatching (CDC/AHG and Flow Cytometry), and antibody analyses (CDC-AHG, Luminex, and Flow Cytometry).

Rush University Medical Center places a strong emphasis on patient care, research, and teaching.  The HLA Director will be required to oversee the technical operations of the laboratory. This will require skills to communicate with physicians regarding theory, implementation of new testing, and the ability to teach residents and other students.  The candidate is expected to develop an extramurally funded basic, applied, and/or translational research.

Candidate must have a M.D., Ph.D., or an equivalent doctoral degree and have four years of postdoctoral training in Immunology and/or Clinical Histocompatibility. The ideal candidate would also be certified/eligible by ABHI or another board approved by HHS and approved/eligible by the ASHI-Director Training Review Committee for HSC/Bone Marrow Transplantation and Solid Organ Transplantation.

The Sales Director position is accountable for developing a comprehensive sales strategy and achieving sales results for the global Applied Markets business. Essential Functions

Leads the development of the budgets and assists with developing approaches to meet and exceed bottomline performance. Develops programs to improve processes and tools to support the needs of the Sales and technical support teams and the overall effectiveness of the Sales Operations organization.

HLA Laboratory Director
Gift of Life Donor Program, Philadelphia, PA

Gift of Life Donor Program, the non-profit agency serving eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware, is responsible for recovering and distributing organ, tissues, bone and cornea used in life-saving and life-enhancing transplants. The GLDP HLA Laboratory provides histocompatibility and serology testing for the GLDP organ tissue, bone and corneal transplant programs. The Director will interact with members of the GLDP recovery team and staff employed at the 151 hospitals and 14 transplant centers in our service area.

The Laboratory Director, responsible for the clinical oversight of both the transplant and GLDP contract testing areas of the laboratory, provides expertise and consultation on molecular HLA typing of donors and patients, based on PCR, hybridization or sequencing; surveys literature in a specific transplant diagnostics application area; consults with sales, technical services and other customers regarding improvements to the transplant diagnostics workflow; and validates, analyzes and interpret test results.

The Director is responsible for planning, organizing and managing the clinical functions of the Laboratory including developing and implementing procedures, methods, and instruments to maintain and/or improve the quality of work performed in the laboratory; training laboratory staff and providing input on the evaluation of staff performance; monitoring compliance with applicable regulations and standards of federal, state, and voluntary organizations as well as GLDP programs and policies; assisting with budget preparation and oversight, selection of staff, equipment and reagents; assisting with implementation of the safety and quality programs; maintaining clear communications and collaborating with the President/CEO, Directors, transplant center staff, clinical staff and staff working in other departments.

Ph.D. or M.D. with ABHI board certification (or eligibility) and 2 years’ experience managing a histocompatibility laboratory required.

Director, Transplant Immunology Laboratory
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Sentara Healthcare, Norfolk, VA

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) is seeking a Director for its Transplant Immunology Laboratory (TIL). This full service transplant laboratory supports adult kidney, heart and pancreas transplant programs at SNGH, as well as, a pediatric kidney transplant program at The Children’s Hospital of the Kings’ Daughters which is located on the same campus. The successful candidate will be joining a well-established TIL team with over fifty-years of experience in histocompatibility testing. The laboratory currently performs; HLA-ABCDRDQ typing by low resolution PCR-SSP, HLA antibody screens and identification by solid-phase flow cytometry beads and luminex micro-array, and crossmatch compatibility using anti-human globulin-enhanced CDC and flow cytometry. The laboratory has recently implemented the Cylex ImmuKnow assay for post transplant monitoring.

The TIL Director must have a M.D., Ph.D. or MD/PhD degree and have the credentials and experience to act in the capacity of a Director, Technical Director, and Clinical Consultant, as defined by ASHI and required by HCFA for a laboratory performing high complexity testing. The Director will oversee, and be responsible for, the proper performance of all aspects of the TIL operation. The candidate must have the communication and collaboration skills needed to consult with TIL clients, including multi-disciplinary teams supporting the transplant programs. The Director must be able to render opinions about how TIL test results impact the diagnosis, treatment and management of patient care.

Position Summary

R&D Director

Position Objective:

To manage the overall product life cycle process for Transplant Diagnostics worldwide.
This includes detailed analysis of the business, industry, clinical and competitor trends, developing organic and inorganic growth strategic plans, managing the product portfolio life-cycle including conception, development, commercialization, and end-of-life, including day-to-day R&D program execution and budgets.

This position has responsibility over a global marketing staff as well as the global R&D resources required for product portfolio development.

On the business side, the role also has responsibilities for achieving revenues associated with new product introduction (NPI and PV), as well as meeting overall global revenue targets for each key product lines, Gross Margins, and quality targets.

On the Program Execution side, the position is responsible for providing technical and people leadership to cross-disciplinary R&D teams as well as personally operating within a cross-functional and matrix environment. The leader will be responsible for directing all research and development strategies and programs including building a high-performance R&D organization, aggressive recruitment of a leading scientific staff, overall management of the business core technology and multi-generational product plans.

Assigned area of responsibility is of considerable size and scope, including managing teams based in the US, Europe and Asia Pacific. This position is part of the Transplant Diagnostics executive council and reports directly to the VP/GM of the Transplant Diagnostics business.

Essential Functions:

Perform detailed analysis of the business area, including business, clinical, health economics, regulatory, industry and competitor trends. Identify customer needs and investigate potential new products and potential market opportunities. Works in conjunction with the TxDx Leadership Team to develop strategic one to five-year plans for Transplant Diagnostics and adjacent growth areas.

Understand future directions of technology and future customer needs; evaluate potential new organic and inorganic business opportunities and formulate recommendations based on known risks and rewards. Shape / champion new markets and directions.

Ensure new product revenue, Gross Margin, and quality targets are met across the product portfolio. Provide tools and resources to help penetrate the market to sales team. Ensure successful delivery of products through the development, launch and commercialization. Provide Marketing leadership to Product Development, Manufacturing and other internal departments in the development of new products or product enhancements.

Lead the effort to develop and execute multi-generational technology, product programs, as well as core science activities. Assure the delivery of successful and timely results consistent with the overall product portfolio, scientific, and commercial strategies of the business. Champion and deploy the Company-wide processes for managing the development of new product programs and continuously improve R&D effectiveness in introducing world-class products.

Build a high performing global R&D organization, able to plan and reliably execute to plan. Develop a long term solid plan to strengthen and retain leading scientific talent. Expand existing research and development organization and programs. Drive R&D excellence and innovation; challenge, motivate and encourage global scientific staff to aggressively extend efforts in the application of technologies.

This position interacts with varying levels of internal and external personnel requiring the ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing Invitrogen’s product development, positioning, operating plans and strategies. Position communicates Invitrogen’s mission as well as interprets policies/programs. Effectiveness in this role requires an in-depth knowledge of those operating plans and strategies as well as industry practices for developing, promoting and selling similar products. Position provides leadership in corporate operating mechanisms: annual world wide Product Planning, semi-annual strategic review (3 year business plan), semi-annual talent and organizational reviews; and other regular organization operating mechanisms. Requires enthusiastic, creative, risk-taker with the ability to comprehend and contribute to the entire IVGN portfolio. High level of visible activity in fostering the rapid acceptance, open dialogue and exchange of new products and technologies in the clinical diagnostics area. Personal desire and ability to build a great product development organization with an entrepreneurial spirit and great desire for growth. Motivation and ability to become an integral partner with the business segment, commercial and manufacturing operations as well as the research and development aspects of the company. Erroneous decisions will result in critical delay(s) in schedules and/or unit operations and may jeopardize overall business activities. May manage through subordinate supervisors.

Education:

Master’s in Biology, Immunology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related discipline or above. M.B.A. strongly preferred.

Experience:

At least 10 years in similar roles including setting strategy, identifying new market opportunities, developing operating plans, and leading R&D organizations. Prior work in HLA/Transplant Diagnostics laboratory would be preferred. A minimum of 5 years of people management experience and 3 years experience managing managers. Must have experience leading products to commercialization. Excellent communication skills as well as analytical, project management and planning skills necessary. Business development skills and cross-functional team leadership experience strongly preferred. Proven ability to see new business opportunities, set and meet aggressive objectives and develop strong working relationships.

Key knowledge includes:

Broad leadership and managerial experience in setting up multiple research and development programs and ability to motivate and direct a large group of marketing and scientific staff focused in core technology, academic research and early drug discovery activities.

  • Serves as liaison between other MEDI groups and Medical Affairs with respect to product-specific publication activities (e.g., participating in regular publication team meetings, etc.)

Requirements:

  • M.S. or equivalent degree in education, biology, microbiology or related biomedical field
  • Doctorate level (Pharm.D., Ed.D., M.D. or Ph.D.) preferred
  • Professional experience in medical information/communication
  • 5+ years experience in medical information/communication in industry and/or academic setting or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with publishing and journal review/selection would be helpful
