Eleven matched unrelated donors (MUDs) were HLA typed for a patient in need of a hematopoietic stem cell transplant. The patient and all MUDs had DRB1*0301, *0801. DRB1*0301 is frequently associated with DRB3*0101 and DRB3*0202. Ten MUDs in this group had DRB3*0101, and one had DRB3*0202. DRB1*0801 is not normally associated with any DRB3, DRB4 or DRB5 alleles. One MUD, however, had DRB3*0101 and DRB3*0202, indicating that one of these DRB3 alleles must be linked to DRB1*0801. In 3950 individuals tested between 2000-2004, 551 were typed with DRB1*0301. DRB1*0301 was linked to DRB3*0101 75% of the time, and to DRB3*0202 25% of the time. 132 individuals were typed with DRB1*0801, and none of these was definitely linked with a DRB3 allele, although 18 were typed with DRB3*0202 along with another DRB1 allele that is commonly associated with DRB3 alleles. Some of these could potentially have DRB1*0801 linked with DRB3*0202, but the linkage was not apparent. The DRB2 pseudogene is normally linked between DRB1 and DRB3 genes. It would be interesting to determine if DRB2 is also present in the haplotype containing DRB1*0801 and a DRB3 allele.
