For patients with Type I Diabetes and end-stage renal disease a combination kidney/pancreas transplant is an important treatment option. In 1998 the first K/P transplant was performed successfully at our transplant center. From 1998-2004 27 female patients and 19 male patients with a median age of 39 years were transplanted. The majority of the patients were on the waiting list for 3-5 years prior to transplant.

The success rate for K/P transplants is 90% for the first year post transplant and 80% over a three year period. Currently another 27 patients are either active or in transplant workup waiting for K/P transplant. Patients were screened by GTI T and B Quikscreen Elisa. The method used for the crossmatch procedure was AHG-CDC. Stastistical evaluation of these patients can be easily monitored and retrieved through the use of the Southern Alberta Transplant database.
